Chōzaemon Umewaka

Noh Theater Master, Kanze School of Noh

Born in Tokyo in 1956, Chōzaemon Umewaka is a leading Shite (principal actor) of the Kanze School of Noh, Japan’s classical theatre tradition with over 650 years of history.

He is officially recognized by the Government of Japan as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (General Designation)—a distinction conferred upon master practitioners who sustain the highest level of traditional performing arts.
Grandson of Minoru Umewaka II, Member of the Japan Art Academy, he began formal training at the age of three within one of Japan’s most distinguished Noh lineage.
